Long-time nuclear waste warning messages are intended to deter human intrusion at nuclear waste repositories in the far future, within or above the order of magnitude of 10, years. Nuclear semiotics is an interdisciplinary field of research, first done by the Human Interference Task Force in A report from Sandia National Laboratories recommended that any such message should comprise four levels of increasing complexity: .
The Sandia report aimed to communicate a series of messages non-linguistically to any future visitors to a waste site. It gave the following wording as an example of what those messages should evoke: . This place is not a place of honor The danger is in a particular location The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically.
This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant has done extensive research in development of written or pictorial messages to warn future generations.
Since today's written languages are unlikely to survive, the research team has considered pictograms and hostile architecture in addition to them. Conceptual designs for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant included an "Information Center" at the geometric center of the site. The building would be an open structure of solid granite or concrete, measuring 40 by 32 by 10 feet The plans included a suggestion that the building be designed so as to create a distinctive whistling sound when wind blew through it, drawing attention to itself.
The Sandia report explored designs for physical markers which conveyed the concepts of dangerous emanations, shapes that evoke bodily harm, and the concept of "shunned land" that appears destroyed or poisoned.Semiotics: the study of signs
Linguist Thomas Sebeokbuilding on earlier work by Alvin Weinberg and Arsen Darnay and working as part of the Human Interference Task Force, proposed the creation of an atomic priesthooda panel of experts comparable to the Catholic churchwhich has preserved and authorized its message for almost 2, years.
The priesthood would preserve the knowledge of radioactive waste's locations and dangers through rituals and myths. The significance of these "radiation cats" or "ray cats" would be reinforced through fairy tales and myths, the story being that one should move away from sites where such creatures are encountered, or where domesticated cats begin to exhibit such behaviour.

Do You Know This Word?Peirce's Sign Theory, or Semiotic, is an account of signification, representation, reference and meaning. Although sign theories have a long history, Peirce's accounts are distinctive and innovative for their breadth and complexity, and for capturing the importance of interpretation to signification.
For Peirce, developing a thoroughgoing theory of signs was a central philosophical and intellectual preoccupation. The importance of semiotic for Peirce is wide ranging. Peirce also treated sign theory as central to his work on logic, as the medium for inquiry and the process of scientific discovery, and even as one possible means for 'proving' his pragmatism. Its importance in Peirce's philosophy, then, cannot be overestimated. Across the course of his intellectual life, Peirce continually returned to and developed his ideas about signs and semiotic and there are three broadly delineable accounts: a concise Early Account from the s; a complete and relatively neat Interim Account developed through the s and s and presented in ; and his speculative, rambling, and incomplete Final Account developed between and The following entry examines these three accounts, and traces the changes that led Peirce to develop earlier accounts and generate new, more complex, sign theories.
However, despite these changes, Peirce's ideas on the basic structure of signs and signification remain largely uniform throughout his developments. Consequently, it is useful to begin with an account of the basic structure of signs according to Peirce. What we see here is Peirce's basic claim that signs consist of three inter-related parts: a sign, an object, and an interpretant.
For the sake of simplicity, we can think of the sign as the signifier, for example, a written word, an utterance, smoke as a sign for fire etc.
The object, on the other hand, is best thought of as whatever is signified, for example, the object to which the written or uttered word attaches, or the fire signified by the smoke. The importance of the interpretant for Peirce is that signification is not a simple dyadic relationship between sign and object: a sign signifies only in being interpreted. This makes the interpretant central to the content of the sign, in that, the meaning of a sign is manifest in the interpretation that it generates in sign users.
Things are, however, slightly more complex than this and we shall look at these three elements in more detail.Kawasan industri nusantara sei mangkei
The very first thing to note is that there are some potential terminological difficulties here. We appear to be saying that there are three elements of a sign, one of which is the sign. This is confusing and does not fully capture Peirce's idea. Strictly speaking, for Peirce, we are interested in the signifying elementand it is not the sign as a whole that signifies. In speaking of the sign as the signifying element, then, he is more properly speaking of the sign refined to those elements most crucial to its functioning as a signifier.Ogden and I.

Peirce also demonstrated that a sign can never have a definite meaningfor the meaning must be continuously qualified. Saussure treated language as a sign-system, and his work in linguistics supplied the concepts and methods that semioticians applied to sign-systems other than language. Saussure also distinguished paroleor actual individual utterances, from languethe underlying system of conventions that makes such utterances understandable; it is this underlying langue that most interests semioticians.
This interest in the structure behind the use of particular signs linked semiotics with the methods of structuralismwhich sought to analyze such relations. Semiotics Article Media Additional Info.
